The skin\u2019s overall functions decrease with age, the result of a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors\u202f:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">intrinsic or chronological change occurs naturally over time, causing structural and functional changes in all layers of the skin;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">extrinsic factors are largely environmental and lifestyle-related, such as pollution, smoking, and chronic sun exposure. In humans, collagen comprises one-third of the total protein, and accounts for three-quarters of the dry weight of skin.\u201d (\u201cCollagen structure and stability\u201d by M. D. Shoulders and Ronald T.Raines).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mostly found in the extracellular matrix of various body\u2019s connective tissues (cartilage, bones, skin), this naturally synthetized protein is produced by fibroblasts and consists of amino acids (particularly glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline) bound together to form a triple helix, providing structure and high resistance to traction forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the skin, the process of collagen synthesis occurs within the dermis, the middle connective tissue layer (between the epidermis and the hypodermis), mainly composed of collagen and elastin fibers surrounded by a \u201cground substance\u201d containing glycosaminoglycans, such as<a href=\"https:\/\/rivoli.ch\/en\/lacide-hyaluronique-existe-sous-differentes-formes\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"807\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> hyaluronic acid<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/rivoli.ch\/en\/lacide-hyaluronique-existe-sous-differentes-formes\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"807\">&nbsp;<\/a>(\u201cHistology, dermis\u201d by Thomas M.
